Games for July 2016

Curse of Strahd
Under raging storm clouds, the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia. A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air. The master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner — and you are invited.

This campaign is based around light Gothic horror role-playing, with significantly less combat and dungeoneering than a typical D&D game. Don’t sign up if you’re looking for a hack-and-slash; do sign up if you want to:

  • Explore a mix of fantasy empowerment and subtle horror,
  • Balance exploration and socializing with combat,
  • Play as crusaders – or defilers – in a dark land, or
  • Experience an update of one of the best regarded D&D modules ever.

Where There’s Smoke
A wave of heat sits over the country of Amidia, the baking sun pours out over the land turning summer grass to dry straw and small brooks to dry beds. A small group of well travelled adventures make their way to the small lake town of Tilbrest, hoping for a chill ale in the GoldenMane Inn and some work from the barkeep there. The journey would be pleasant if not for the burning heat and, although there is a general feeling of happiness for the long summer, something seems strange: there is whispers of demons in the small hours of darkness, of travellers being lost on the road and for unknown reasons the Solstice Market that is usually held on the lake edge has been cancelled by the council of the local ruling city Morgath.

The Almanac of Insei
Aah, the world of Pokémon. A world where pet fighting is an actively encouraged hobby, a world with a complete disregard for standardised education in favour of unsupervised exploration, a world full of incompetent criminal organisations, normalized animal slavery and technology more akin to magic whose inner workings are never really questioned. A world where you can do anything, so long as you are a small child with a (sometimes literally) fire breathing monster strapped to your back and a twinkle in your eye. Fortunately for you, you are just such a child.

One Step Beyond
The crystal obelisk at the heart of the PC’s village has started to pulsate. Though infrequent at first the pulsations have been getting steadily more frequent, and seem to be building towards something climatic. The village elders, worried that whatever is coming might be cataclysmic in nature, need volunteers to travel into the desert to find the “Mystics” and discover the meaning behind the crystal before it’s too late. As the most gifted members of the village it will be up to you, the PCs, to take on this quest, wherever it might lead…

Malkav Mansion
You are a vampire, having been summoned by the Prince who is simply known as “The Ventruth”, you are charged with finding a previous team who were themselves charged with investigating a mansion on the outskirts of town. In this mansion, there has been a suspected anti-vampire movement, but that is as far as the information goes, the last transmission from the previous team simply said the word “Antediluvian.”
The mansion is more than meets the eye. You find yourself in a whole different world of ghosts, zombies, werewolves, mad scientists and who knows what else. You will face great enemies as you have to investigate and discover the mansion and its secrets.
